Intro to Wheel Throwing: January Mondays 6PM-8PM

Learn a new hobby at a Ceramics Class in San Diego. Join the Wheel & Fire Pottery community, where all levels are welcome.

Dates of this four-week San Diego pottery class:

  • Week 1: Monday, Jan. 6 - 01/6/2025 - 6pm-8pm
  • Week 2: Monday, Jan. 13 - 01/13/2025 - 6pm-8pm
  • Week 3: Monday, Jan. 20 - 01/20/2025 - 6pm-8pm
  • Week 4: Monday, Jan. 27 - 01/27/2025 - 6pm-8pm

This class is perfect for beginners and potters with some experience.

In this ceramics and pottery class, you will learn the foundational skills and techniques needed to pursue wheel throwing as a lifelong art form. Taught by an experienced Wheel & Fire instructor, this course offers a step-by-step approach to making pottery using a potter's wheel. Ceramics Class Structure:

Duration: Four classes (one class each week), each class lasting two hours (for a total of 8 hours of guided instruction).

Time: 6:00PM-8:00PM on 1/6/25, 1/13/25, 1/20/25, 1/27/25

Studio Access:

Enrollment includes unlimited 24/7 access to our pottery studio (excluding designated class times; see Student Open Studio for more information) for the duration of the course. This allows you to practice your skills on the wheel and complete your projects.

What You'll Learn:

By the end of the Intro to Wheel Throwing ceramics class, you will be able to throw cups, bowls, and plates, as well as apply basic surface decoration and glazing techniques.

Pottery Class Outline:

  • Week 1: Studio orientation, wedging clay, wheel operation and body positioning, centering clay, and preparing to pull walls.
  • Week 2: Techniques for pulling walls, throwing cups versus bowls, and throwing plates.
  • Week 3: Trimming earthenware, scraffito surface decoration, and additional demonstrations on wheel techniques.
  • Week 4: Glazing techniques, final demonstrations, and advanced wheel techniques, including making handles.

Materials Included in Pottery Class Registration:

  • Each student receives 25 pounds of clay for use during the course.
  • Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
