Intro to Wheel Throwing: January Sundays 10:00AM-12:00PM

Join one of our San Diego pottery classes at Wheel & Fire, where all levels are welcome. This Intro to Wheel Throwing class is perfect for beginners or those with some experience on the pottery wheel.

Dates for this Pottery Class: 

  • Week 1: Sunday, Jan. 5 - 01/05/2025 - 10AM-12PM
  • Week 2: Sunday, Jan. 12 - 01/12/2025 - 10AM-12PM
  • Week 3: Sunday, Jan. 19 - 01/19/2025 - 10AM-12PM
  • Week 4: Sunday, Jan. 26 - 01/26/2025 - 10AM-12PM

In this pottery class, you will learn the foundational skills and techniques needed to pursue wheel throwing as a lifelong art form. Taught by an experienced Wheel & Fire Pottery ceramicist, this course offers a step-by-step approach to making pottery using a potter's wheel.

Course Structure:

  • Duration: Four weekly sessions, each lasting two hours (total of 8 hours of guided instruction).

Ceramics Studio Access in San Diego: 

Enrollment includes unlimited 24/7 access to our pottery studio (excluding designated class times; see Student Open Studio for more information) for the duration of the course. This allows you to practice your skills on the wheel and complete your projects.

What You'll Learn:

By the end of the Intro to Wheel Throwing class, you will be able to throw cups, bowls, and plates, as well as apply basic surface decoration and glazing techniques.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1: Studio orientation, wedging clay, wheel operation and body positioning, centering clay, and preparing to pull walls.
  • Week 2: Techniques for pulling walls, throwing cups versus bowls, and throwing plates.
  • Week 3: Trimming earthenware, scraffito surface decoration, and additional demonstrations on wheel techniques.
  • Week 4: Glazing techniques, final demonstrations, and advanced wheel techniques, including making handles.

Materials Included:

  • Each student receives 25 pounds of clay for use during the class.
  • Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
