Intro to Wheel Throwing: January Saturdays 1:00PM-3:00PM

Join a ceramics class in San Diego at Wheel & Fire Pottery, where all levels of experience are welcome. This San Diego ceramics class is perfect for beginners or those with some experience on the pottery wheel. All tools and supplies are included, along with unlimited pottery studio time.

Dates of this four-week San Diego pottery class:

  • Week 1: Saturday, Jan. 04 - 01/4/2025 - 1pm-3pm
  • Week 2: Saturday, Jan. 11 - 01/11/2025 - 1pm-3pm
  • Week 3: Saturday, Jan. 18 - 01/18/2025 - 1pm-3pm
  • Week 4: Saturday, Jan. 25 - 01/25/2025 - 1pm-3pm

In this pottery class, you will learn the foundational skills and techniques needed to pursue wheel throwing as a lifelong art form. Taught by an experienced Wheel & Fire Pottery ceramicist, this course offers a step-by-step approach to making pottery using a potter's wheel. Our studio is centrally located in San Diego, not far from La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Hillcrest, North Park, and Downtown.

Pottery Class Structure:

  • Duration: Four weekly sessions, each lasting two hours (total of 8 hours of guided instruction).
  • Dates of Class: January Saturdays - 1/4/251/11/251/18/251/25/25
  • Time: 1:00PM - 3:00PM

Pottery Studio Access:

Enrollment includes unlimited 24/7 access to our pottery studio (excluding designated class times; see Student Open Studio for more information) for the duration of the course. This allows you to practice your skills on the wheel and complete your projects.

What You'll Learn:

By the end of the Intro to Wheel Throwing pottery class, you will be able to throw cups, bowls, and plates, as well as apply basic surface decoration and glazing techniques.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1: Studio orientation, wedging clay, wheel operation and body positioning, centering clay, and preparing to pull walls.
  • Week 2: Techniques for pulling walls, throwing cups versus bowls, and throwing plates.
  • Week 3: Trimming earthenware, scraffito surface decoration, and additional demonstrations on wheel techniques.
  • Week 4: Glazing techniques, final demonstrations, and advanced wheel techniques, including making handles.

Materials Included in Pottery Class Registration:

  • Each student receives 25 pounds of clay for use during the class.
  • Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
